About Our Herding Classes

Our herding classes are designed to give dogs a safe and structured opportunity to explore their natural instincts while building clear communication between dog and handler.

Whether you’re completely new to herding or looking to progress your skills, our sessions are tailored to meet each team where they’re at. We focus on creating a calm, supportive learning environment where both dogs and handlers can develop confidence, understanding, and control.

All dogs begin in the round yard for assessment and foundation work. From there, suitable teams may progress into the open paddock, depending on their behaviour, control, and intent on the day. This flexible structure allows us to prioritise safety, welfare, and meaningful progression.

Our herding season runs from March through to October, allowing us to work in conditions that are safe and fair for both dogs and livestock. We take regular weather and welfare considerations seriously, ensuring our sheep are worked thoughtfully and never overworked.

Herding is not about chasing sheep — it’s about balance, communication, and learning to work with instinct in a controlled and ethical way. Not every dog will take to it, and that’s okay. Our role is to guide the experience safely and honestly, giving each dog the opportunity to engage in a way that suits them.

At Hooked on Hounds, we prioritise:

  • Animal welfare above all else
  • Clear, fair communication
  • A calm and respectful working environment
  • Practical, real-world understanding of dogs

If you’re looking to explore your dog’s genetics, build engagement, or simply try something different in a supportive setting, our herding classes are a great place to start.
